Los Angeles, California
Mr. Alvarez joined Castro & Associates as an experienced construction litigator. He was a seasoned trial attorney for over 30 years and tried 29 jury trials to verdict.  He also has dozens of arbitrations and mediations under his belt. From 1987 to 1994 he was a partner at Dennison, Bennett & Press, handling both liability and construction defect litigation.

He was Associate Managing Attorney for Travelers Insurance Company where he supervised Travelers attorneys and support staff, while handling a “heavy litigation case load” involving high exposure cases.  Mr. Alvarez learned commitment, hard work and determination in the United States Army where he served in Korea in the 1970’s.

At the Castro firm Mr. Alvarez handled wrongful insurance cancellation claims by Prairie Medical Group, where dozens of doctors and medical practitioners had to close their business because of “bad faith” cancellation by their own insurance company.  The Castro firm joined with the Shernoff, Bidart, firm to achieve a multi-million-dollar recovery.

In other HOA “bad faith” litigation, Mr. Alvarez took numerous depositions of the adjuster and vice president PMQ of National Union resulting in a successful settlement.

More recently, Mr. Alvarez spearheaded a massive, multi-party construction defect lawsuit against over 50 contractors, sub-contractors and design professionals. Because of the size of the case and multi-million dollar demands by the plaintiff, over 350 days of depositions were taken.  Mr. Alvarez diligently prepared for and took or defended over 100 of those 350 deposition days.  In part because of his diligence, hard work and persistence, the case settled in late 2017 for $55,000,000.  Without Mr. Alvarez’s contribution, the $55,000,000 settlement would not have been possible.

Mr. Alvarez graduated from UCLA School of Letters and Science [1977], with a degree in political science and later earned a doctorate degree in law from UCLA School of Law in 1981. He has been a member of the California Bar Association for over 37 years.  Along with other members of Castro & Associates, Mr. Alvarez has helped earn the Martindale Hubble “AV” rating for the highest ethical standards and legal ability, the pinnacle of “professional excellence.”

Mr. Alvarez also assisted in the litigation of the San Simeon death cases tried in San Luis Obispo in 2008.  He was instrumental in taking percipient and expert depositions that lead to a successful jury trial and affirmance by the Court of Appeal, which fully adopted the plaintiff position that local city ordinances mandating earthquake retrofitting by a certain date, did not insulate the building owners from injuries or death caused by collapse of the building prior to the compliance date.  [See Myrick v. Mastagni, (2010) 185 Cal. App. 4th 1082]

These words were written about Mr. Alvarez and the Castro firm in achieving the remarkable $55,000,000 settlement:  “I observed the highest level of commitment and professionalism.  The dedication of the attorneys and staff to provide the best possible service to the client, at significant inconvenience to themselves, led to a successful and favorable settlement of a difficult case. In my opinion Castro and Associates met the highest standards of the legal profession and deserves the highest accolades.”  [Peter Viri, 2018, UCLA Law]
